A culture of embrace, commonality, and trust. Culture runs deep here on the Islands, whether you are a long-time local or a short-timer. It controls, defines, pushes, & creates much of what we see, do, hear, and find important.
It requires Community. Embracing the local values, personality and life. We are a community of folks committed to investment. We invest - in the community, in the culture. We do this because we believe that investing - digging deep and planting - is the best way to see life thrive. We believe that cultivation of that life is key to sustainability, to hope, to bigger things. It means investing not to the end of just one’s growth, but the growth of many.
It seeks the Other. It is not about only us, but them, It gives what it has received. It seeks to breathe into, not to take from. To not let stuff control us, but to use what we have to help others, believing the greater good is found in love. And in love we find real hope.
It thrives on Listening. On humility & learning. Living through humility to see the world as it is, & the audacity to imagine the world as it could be.
It promotes Imagination. A willingness to see transformation happen through sacrifice. To believe that things are not more important than persons. That what you do is not more important than who you are. But what you do does matter. But just doing for doing sake isn’t imagination. Imagination to see around corners, to think beyond the two square feet of earth we occupy at any given time, to find & build where others may not or will not. Because we can & should.
It Seeks with Great Risk. It isn’t afraid of failure or struggle. It will risk in order to see fruit. We will sacrifice to see new life. It requires patience & kindness, resilience & grit: a hard-edged hope. It’s having the ambition to learn at the edge, the wisdom to admit failure, and the courage to start again.
Ha: It means breathing new life. Living with new hope. And embracing the great story that leads us there.
